How Can You Efficiently Offload Data Traffic, If You Can't Locate It?
With data traffic exploding, network capacity is a critical challenge for many operators. There are many ways to address capacity issues in the Radio Access Network (RAN) including RF optimization, new sites, new carriers, femtocells and distributed antenna systems. The challenge in deciding which of these solutions to deploy, and where, is that many operators only have a sector-level visibility of the location of their traffic. That means that for a typical 3 sector site, where the site radius is 2 to 4 km or more, the operator can only locate traffic to within an area of roughly 4 to 16 square km.
For options such as new carriers, which improve capacity across an entire sector, this may be perfectly acceptable. But when it comes to new sites, femtocells and distributed antenna systems, sector level traffic information doesn't give any insight into whether these solutions will address issues, or more importantly, exactly where they should be deployed.
