An Industry Vision for Minimizing Network OPEX via Automation.
Self-Optimizing Networks (SON) is an industry vision for minimizing OPEX by implementing fully automatic network optimization algorithms. For 2G and 3G networks, progress to fully automatic SON has been impeded by a lack of standards, leaving many operators to take a “semi-automatic” approach to 2G and 3G optimization processes. The “semi-automatic” approach focuses on enabling human decision making rather than replacing it with unattended and fully automatic algorithms.
For LTE, the Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance (NGMN) has introduced a standardized set of requirements for LTE Self-Optimizing Network as part of a comprehensive automation approach called Self-Organizing Networks. The 3GPP standards bodies have adopted a subset of NGMN requirements, focusing on fully automatic optimization algorithms which may be embedded in the LTE base station (eNodeB). While this approach will enable a fully automatic approach to selected LTE Network Optimization Nil processes, there is a large gap between operator needs outlined by NGMN and the 3GPP standards.
